PSP PlayStation Portable Review

We review the two Sony PlayStation Portable models, the PSP®go and PSP 3000, both designed to be slim, light, and portable to travel with you wherever you want to be entertained. We’ll take a look at features, what regular users think of their purchase, and the places to get the best PSP deals.

With PSP, you get the all the excitement of a PlayStation 3 console, but in a portable format; a crisp LCD screen, hundreds of games and movies, digital comics, Internet browsing capability, and more.

The slightly larger PSP 3000 provides an advanced LCD screen with vibrant natural colors and anti-reflection technology to make viewing easier even in sunlight. A built-in microphone and Wi-Fi access are included, so you can play and chat in multi-player games, or even call friends for free* on SkypeTM.

The smaller PSP®go system features instant Wi-Fi downloads of games, add-ons, comics, demos, and the latest TV shows and movies from the PlayStation®Store.

PSP Reviews: What real users think

The PSP 3000 generally receives a slightly higher rating than the PSP go, though the overall  rating for both is faily high.

PSP®go reviews

More than half pf the people who shop for the PSP go end up purchasing it. (White is more popular than black, but both sell well.) Most of the ones who don’t buy the PSP 3000 instead.

Pros: Buyers love being able to take the PSP go anywhere. Even though small to make it more portable they feel the color screen quality is excellent. Users enjoy the Skype and internet browsing features. You can use the internet feature and Remote Play to connect to your PS3, if you have one. Games load faster with the built-in hard disc compared to UMD loads. Former cellphone gamers love the upgrade.  The most common comments are it is truly portable, easy to use, and fun.

Cons:  The most common complaint about the PSP go is that you must download games since it does not have a UMD (Universal Media Disc) slot. Not all PSP games are available in a downloadable version, and it takes about 7 days for the codes to be emailed to use the three free games.  If you are clear about this limitation, then users seem to enjoy the take-anywhere size and clear graphics. If you already have UMD games from a previous PSP, you might prefer the PSP 3000.

PSP 3000 reviews

Over three-fourths of people who shop for a PSP 3000 buy one. There are VERY few negative reviews, unusual for any electronic device.

Pros: Screen resolution is a consistent high point. Buyers like the dual ability to use UMD games along with Wi-Fi online downloads; UMD opens up the option of purchasing cheaper games. The 3000 can also interface with the PS3, for those who own both. Controls are more convenient than the “go.” It also plays the popular MP4 video format. The general feeling is it is a “go almost anywhere, do almost anything” gaming device.

Cons: Some wish the battery lasted longer. One user warns against buying Memory Sticks on eBay, as some are pirated and do not function properly. Headphones improve the sound quality.

“And the PSP Winner Is ….”

Which flavor of PSP is right for you seems to depend on your expectations and flexibility. Both have great screens and reliable hardware functions. If you want a standalone unit you can take anywhere, then the PSP go looks like the ticket. However, you want a more flexible gaming platform that still has a lot of portability, you’ll probably like the PSP 3000 better.
